Watermelon Day

Good Afternoon!

We had a wonderful Watermelon Day today in kindergarten!  We started the morning by painting a paper plate to resemble a watermelon.

We had a watermelon taste test.  We tasted real watermelon, watermelon candy, watermelon cookies, and watermelon juice!  Yum!  We made a list of our favorite items from the taste test.

We also did some science with "Walter the Watermelon."  We made estimates for Walter's circumference and the number of seeds that were inside.  After measuring Walter with a tape measure, we cut him open and counted all the seeds!

A glyph is a picture that gives information.  We made a watermelon glyph.  The key for what each part of the watermelon represents is on the back.

This afternoon we took our painted watermelons and added seeds to illustrate a number sentence!

We even watched a story about a town of people that were afraid of watermelon!!!

What a great day!  Tomorrow is Ice Cream Day!!  I can't wait!

May Day

Good Afternoon,

We had a great day in kindergarten!

Happy Birthday Sophia!

We started this morning by learning a new song about moving to first grade.  These will be sent home in poem notebooks tomorrow.

We made sight words out of pretzels at snack time.

We discussed the sequence of the story, Max Takes the Train.

In science we explored what happens to drops of water on different types of paper.  We found out quickly that not all paper aborbs water the same!

This afternoon, Mother Nature gave us a break and we were able to deliver May Day Baskets in the neighborhood!

Have a great evening!

Word Hunters

Good Afternoon!

This morning we were word hunters.  We searched our classroom library books for words that began with W and J.  We quickly found out that words beginning with W were much easier to find!  We also reviewed our color words.

Our new poem this week is Jack and Jill.  We changed the poem up a little bit by changing the names, nouns, body part, and ending verb.  Our new versions were hysterical and so we decided to write our own versions on the bottom of our poems for our poem notebooks!

We also reflected on our kindergarten year-to be shared at our End of Year Celebration.

This afternoon we started to construct our May Day baskets that we will deliver on Thursday afternoon...hopefully the rain/snow will have let up a little by then!

Have a great day!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl

Subtract with a Pirate

Good Afternoon,

On this cold, rainy day, we learned a new game to play with our sight words.  The game, Bang, will be coming home in Friday folders so your child can teach you how to play!

This afternoon we wrote pirate number stories to use with our Subtract with a Pirate song.  We will be publishing these on the iPads with Mrs. Garrett on Wednesday!

Have a great evening!

Penguins

Good Evening!

Happy Earth Day!  Today we made special Earth Day hats and talked about ways to take time to be kind to our earth.

This morning we did research on penguins.  We pulled important information out of the text we were reading.  Then we wrote mini-reports!

We also made penguins out of clay.  We will paint them later this week!

Have a great evening!  See you in the morning!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl

Last week we celebrated Sada's birthday!  Happy Birthday Sada!

We also participated in Jump Rope for Heart:

We made a city-similar to the setting of our story, Abuela.

Today we played a game with all of our kindergarten sight words.  We had to practice our listening skills and our reading skills at the same time!

Have a wonderful evening!
