Day 40!!!

Good Afternoon,

Today was a high energy day in kindergarten!  I think we are excited for Halloween and our scarecrow parade tomorrow!!!

We added a scarecrow poem to our poem notebooks today.  This poem was especially fun because there is a baggie with our friends names inside to add into our poem.  Have fun reading this poem at home, poem notebooks need to be returned on Friday.

This afternoon we worked with Amelia's mom and art adventure.  We talked about a Native American vest made with beads.  Then we made our own beaded bracelets.

Today was Day 40!!!  Zero the Hero brought cookies!

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Scarecrows continued

Good Afternoon,

This morning we talked about two really big words:  Classifying and Categorizing.  Basically, it's sorting. :)

We categorized pictures into different places in our community.  These places were all in our story Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip.

For math, we worked on decorating our scarecrow vests!!!  Our costumes are almost complete!

This afternoon, we had a guest teacher.  Mrs. Huettl met with kiddos in the hallway to see how much we have learned so far this year in kindergarten!  I can not wait to share results with you at our conferences!

See you tomorrow!

Mrs. Huettl

The Making of a Scarecrow

Good Afternoon,

Along with introducing our new story and vocabulary words this morning...

We started making our costumes for the annual Kindergarten Scarecrow Parade!  Today we made our masks!  We used lots of different shapes.  They turned out very cute.

Here is a picture of our shape scarecrows from last week:

Have a great evening!  See you tomorrow!

Poem Notebooks

Good Evening!

We had a great day in kindergarten.  As part of Whole Brain Teaching, we keep track of smilies and frownies throughout our day.  We had SO many smilies today!  We set our focus during morning meeting to do our best and be a friend.  We really did well!!!

Today poem notebooks were sent home for the first time.  Kindergarteners should read these poems to friends, family, stuffed animals, pets, pumpkins, just about anything to get them to read and reread these poems.  Today we read our poem notebooks with a partner(s).

Then we shared our poem notebooks and read with our 2nd grade buddies.

We made shape scarecrows today.  I can not believe I left school without a picture of them!  I will have to post one on Monday.  They are hanging up in our hallway and look oh, so cute!  Besides shape identification, this project was used to assess student's ability to follow directions. There were a lot of directions!

Today we cleaned up in time to see our scary face picture!

Have a wonderful weekend.  Remember to turn in yellow reading slips and pledge packets this coming week.  Our Read-a-Thon is wrapping up!

Mrs. Huettl

Shapes

Good Evening!

Today we celebrated Nick's birthday!   Happy Birthday Nick!!!

We made scarecrows with pattern blocks today.

During transitions, to get our wiggles out we sing a variety of fun, sometimes academic, sometimes silly songs.  I'm sure you have heard a few of them at home by this point in the year :)  One of the songs we sing is called Boogaloo.  During this song we pretend to be Frankenstein:

a hairy gorilla:

and a funky chicken:

Oh so fun!!!

This afternoon we took a silly class picture.  The only way students would be able to see this picture is if they cleaned up the room after choice time before our clean up song was finished.  Guess what?  They did it!  Here is our silly class picture:

See you tomorrow!

SMART is Back

Good Afternoon!

We were so excited today because SMART time is back!  The past couple of weeks other things seemed to keep getting in the way.  Today, we were back in full force!  We worked on 2-d shape identification while bouncing on the trampoline.

Before crossing the balance beam, we picked a letter out of a conatiner, then said the letter sound the whole way across the beam.  When we reached the end, we placed our letter into an abc puzzle.

We also did our hotdog rolls across the carpet and crossed our midlines by touching our elbow to our opposite knee.

To work on our fine motor skills we scooped popcorn kernals into a pumpkin container.

We laced Halloween lacing cards.

We used tweezers to sort pumpkin and ghost erasers into two separate piles.

This morning we made Plaidypus puppets!

Have a wonderful evening!!!

Mrs. Huettl

Predicting and Investigating

Good Afternoon,

Some big ideas-predicting and investigating, but that is what we conquered today in kindergarten!

This morning we read the story, The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.  We stopped midway through to predict what the lady would see when she opened the door.  We put our predictions behind a paper door.  Many of us where right on with our predictions.  We discussed how you need to take the information you already know from a story to make a prediction, it shouldn't just be a complete random guess.

We also learned about sequence.  We talked about clue words and put the Little Old Lady story in order, as well as our Plaidypus Lost story from yesterday.

We continued to work on our shape posters.

This afternoon we investigated a leaf!  We went outside and chose a leaf from the ground.  We wrote about the color and drew an accurate picture.

We measured our leaf with cubes.

We measured the surface area with pennies.

We also found out how many pennies it would take to get our leaf to sink in water.

We dropped our leaf to see how long it took to float to the ground.

So many science skills were used this afternoon!

See you tomorrow!

Back At It!

Good Afternoon-

When I went to add this new post, I realized I never posted on Wednesday afternoon!  Yikes!  My apologies!

Today we were back at it.  After four days away from school, we readjusted to "school life."  We are doing a fantastic job with our reading stamina and today our guided reading lessons began in full force with each group receiving 15-18 minutes of uninterrupted instruction with Mrs. Huettl.

We added four new word work choice today.  I will post more about them tomorrow-with pictures, but see if your child can remember any of the new options.

We had some computer glitches this morning.  Like major computer glitches, and I thought I had lost everything from my computer!  (deep breaths!)  Fortunately, somehow it fixed itself while we were at lunch and recess, and we were able to do our calendar this afternoon!

We also had art adventure this afternoon with Mrs. Board.  This time she came dressed as a cowboy!  We looked at a portrait of a young married couple today.  It will be so exciting to see these things at the Art Institute in a couple months.

In math today we searched for shapes in magazines.  Each table was in charge of a shape poster.  Tomorrow each table will receive a new shape poster to add to.  We will post final pictures of our posters when they are complete.

We are having lots of fun playing with each other and working together at choice time!

Have a great evening!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl
