An Amazing Week!

Good Afternoon!

What a great first week we just experienced together!  I just have a feeling that this year is going to be something amazing!  I'm actually a little sad that it will be two whole days before we are back together again!

Nora was our special helper today.  One of the jobs of the calendar helper is to pull down a penny for each day we have school, and then write the amount using the cents symbol.  Nora was a fantastic helper!

Today we had a multi-step project that we worked on throughout the day.  We read the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and then made our own Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees.  To complete this project we had to use all of the supplies that we have introduced this week.  First we colored the tree.  The next step was to cut out the tree and glue it to the paper.  This gave us the opportunity to introduce glue sticks.  Next we finished two sentences by writing our name and the number of letters in our name.  Finally we were able to add letter stickers to our trees!  Each tree includes the letters from that student's name.

The trees are not in your child's BEE Book, because they are hanging out in our hallway for all to see!  I will send them home when they come off of display.

While working on projects, we want to keep the traffic to the garbage can and the loss of pieces at a minimum, so this year, we have scrap buckets!  A scrap bucket is a bucket that sits in the middle of your table and as you are cutting and ending up with scraps, you put them into the bucket.  That way we can easily get at pieces that accidentally made their way to the scrap bucket and keep our work space clear.  Scrap buckets get emptied during out clean up time.

At Somerset, each class is matched up with a buddy class.  Our buddy class is Mr. Messicci's second graders.  We met our buddies today by matching up puzzle pieces.  Our puzzle piece had a picture, and our buddy's piece had a word to match the picture.  Once we were all partnered up, we were able to spread out and read together outside!

This afternoon we had our first Spanish class with Senora Crider.  You should have seen their expressions when she came in and said, "Buenos Dias Classe."  One friend shouted out, "I don't know how to do Spanish class!"  By the end of the lesson, they were all jumping around and playing a musical movement game in Spanish.  It was fun to watch!

We ended our day with an all-school meeting.  We were able to learn more about Mrs. Palodichuck, go over some building wide expectations regarding the hallway, recess, lunchroom, bathroom, etc., and we ended with a fun slide show full of pictures from this week!  One friend said, "That made me so happy, I almost started to cry." (Do you see what I mean?  This year is going to be awesome!)

Looking forward to another great week!  Enjoy your weekend, get some rest!

Love,
Mrs. Huettl
