Good Afternoon!
We had an AMAZING first day of kindergarten! We met outside this morning and waited for our friends to arrive.
After taking papers out of our backpacks and putting them away on our hooks, we started with our Morning Meeting. This is a time of day for all the members of our classroom to gather together in a circle. Morning Meeting serves several purposes. It is a transition time from home to school, helps all children to feel welcome and known, sets the tone for our day, and creates a climate of trust, self-confidence, and investment in learning.
We also started our calendar routine on the Promethean Board. Ask your child about the "magic hat!"
We received a letter from our building engineer, saying that he found a family of bears on the playground last night and he thinks they may have gotten into our school! So, of course, we went on a "bear" hunt. This bear hunt happened to bring us to the music, Spanish, and art rooms, the library, the gym, the cafeteria, as well as the main office, principal's, counselor's, and nurses office. We didn't find any real bears, but we each found a beanie baby bear to carry around with us!
When we returned to the classroom, those sneaky bears had left us a snack of Teddy Grahams! Yum!
We were super excited we it was time to play outside for recess. We talked about the boundaries and took some time to check out the butterfly garden before heading to the playground.
This afternoon we had both computer class and a kindness lesson. In between we read the story, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. This sweet story is about a little raccoon named Chester on his first day of school. To help Chester adjust to his new school routine, his mother plants a kiss in the middle of his hand. Whenever he is lonely at school, he can press his hand to his cheek and as Chester's mother says, "that very kiss will jump to your face and fill you with toasty warm thoughts!" We made a Kissing Hand project for you and your family to enjoy at home.
This afternoon we started to open some of the play areas in our classroom, the first being Table Toys. Friends gathered around tubs of manipulatives and enjoyed each others creativity and company.
Each of your children received a B.E.E. book this afternoon. This is an important folder that must come to school each day. Please review the contents this evening.
Looking forward to another great day tomorrow!
Love,
Mrs. Huettl
